spring here almost

‘ spring here almost’

she said while i

stared down at the

tight fabric

‘birds come back

i hear them sing’

and she stirs the ice

fluently

in english

‘home birds all the time

every day spring’

it was the most

equatorial phrase

every spoken

‘i come here

fie years now

no like the cold’

i assure her

no sane soul does

the bouncer props open the door

the cool fresh

of saturday night

enters and she shivers

‘oooooh no like’

and i smile

as her nipples

become apparent

and me

i’m heart broke

paying a debt

for the wages of sin

i say

“he vivido aquí

toda mi vida

las aves siempre vuelven

sé lo mucho

que anhelamos

para su pueblo

y su familia

cada cosa

que el amor

está muerto”

she looks at me

darkest eyes

shining brightest

neon wishes

says

‘ i no understand’

i say

‘i know’
